Four-Star FD series gantry-type double-column milling machine

The FD series by Four-Star is a range of double-column machining centers with fixed cross-rail, designed for large-format workpiece machining in sectors including heavy die and mold making, aerospace, and industrial machinery manufacturing.

The structural design integrates fixed columns, a rigid cross-rail, and a box-in-box grey cast-iron frame with internal ribbing throughout the base, columns, saddle, and cross-rail. Each column base is enlarged by 50% relative to the column spacing, maximizing static and dynamic rigidity under intensive roughing loads. The RAM spindle head is supported by roller guideways, with a standard cross-section of 450×400 mm and optional 550×550 mm and 650×650 mm versions for larger models. All guide surfaces undergo precision hand-scraping, with planarity verified by laser calibration.

X-axis travel ranges from 2,200 to 6,000 mm; Y-axis from 1,300 to 5,400 mm; and Z-axis from 800 to 1,500 mm. Column spacing covers 1,400 to 5,450 mm, with table loads up to 26 tons. The BBT-50 spindle operates at up to 6,000 rpm and 22/26 kW (continuous/30 min), driven by a two-stage H/L planetary gearbox with efficiency exceeding 95%. The 32-tool ATC magazine with random tool selection in the shortest direction is standard equipment. Positioning accuracy is ±0.015 mm over full travel, with repeatability of ±0.003 mm.

The standard CNC controller is FANUC 0iMF, with support for 5-face machining functions, tool load monitoring, and AI contour control. Optional CNC alternatives include Mitsubishi, Siemens, and Heidenhain. The series also supports 90° angular milling heads, universal heads, 5-face and 5-axis simultaneous heads, automatic head changer (AHC), CNC rotary table, and coolant through spindle (CTS).

The FD series targets manufacturers requiring high load capacity, extended travel ranges, and consistent structural rigidity for large-workpiece machining across variable tooling configurations and production environments.
